about

This is the seventh entry (ECSS7) in the Ecstattic Singles series.

"Black Angels" is the first release from a re-formed version of the long-running DC-via-Philly noise-pop (or, as they'd call it, pop blight) band BR'ER. Recorded live during a two-day stopover on tour, these two songs capture the band's seething intensity and raw emotional assault.

After years of shifting lineups and a propensity for chamber-pop, this new version of Br'er wastes no time in going for the throat: Pounding drums, white-noise synths and throbbing bass combine to form a nearly insurmountable wall of noise; one that is only broken by the frankly catchy melodies and simple, memorable vocals.

On these two songs, Br'er show how expertly they ride the line between beauty and chaos, violently switching between well-oiled post punk mechanisms and screeching, atonal pounding. It seems impossible to get something as jagged and confounding as "Black Angels" stuck in your head, but you probably will.
