"Fade and Collapse" is the second EP by Dystopian Math-rock Soul duo Yume Nikki. Starting out as the solo noise project of studio proprietor Ali, it quickly morphed into a whisper-quiet slowcore group before taking an even weirder turn with its current incarnation.

"Fade and Collapse" re-introduces Yume Nikki, now featuring Pat McCabe (Nallo, No Skin) as an experimental juggernaut that encompasses the heavy pop sounds of 90s math rock/emo/guitar pop, the weird textures of ambient music and the nocturnal propulsion of space rock. All of this is tied together by the ultra-minimalist setup (just guitar, drums and one voice) and the inimitable instrumental interplay of a musical duo which, paradoxically, allows the EP to dramatically and seamlessly move between styles and movements.

Nowhere is this more evident than the song "Yume Nikki," which moves between gentle ambience, bracing punk, groove-laden math-rock and a seemingly endless post-rock build before fizzling out and landing right back where it started; a tidy summation of the band and its unpredictable machinations.
