This self-titled EP is the second release from Minneapolis-based Motown-Punks BLUE RUIN.

Representing a departure from their first EP, "Blue Ruin" trades in the scuzzed-out good-time vibes of their debut for something darker and more nuanced, mixing Big Classic Rock, Motown and weirdo punk rock into a groove-heavy exploration of various heartbreaks.

The change pays dividend right from the start: "Franklin" is an infectious slice of guitar-pop heaven, while "Get Up & Go" rides a skeletal groove into straight-up rock-n-roll territory. Meanwhile, "Carnivore" and "Park Bench" show the band equally adept at slowing things down to a propulsive mid-tempo for some bruised balladeering.

I could write more, but this insanely tight four-song set does all the convincing on its own. Give it a spin and you'll be coming back for more.
