NILE is the second release from SMMNR, a two-piece electronic group from Minneapolis that was active between the summer and winter seasons of 2013.

Stemming from a handful of incredibly productive improvisatory sessions - and a single, bizarre performance in a dilapidated basement - SMMNR created bizarre, debris-strewn synthetic soundscapes that mixed cutting, over-amplified synthesizers with analog drum loops and brutally lo-fi vocals and noise elements.

NILE was intended to be their second release - following their debut tape EP, PEAKS - but the band dissolved, leaving the album languishing in "development hell."

Now, upon its long delayed release, the album has actually benefited from time and distance. What once seemed like a fizzling swan song now appears to be the perfect ending; both a distillation of the previous album's strengths and an expansion upon its sonic template. NILE is unexpectedly lush, full of sighing synths, delicate ambient textures and weirdly human textures - portentous piano chords, feedback swells, the occasional audible lyric, etc.

It's a record for the start of winter, for staying in and appreciating the dreamy, frigid landscape before it turns to harsh, slushy reality.
